Has €10M funding for Killybegs Harbour works washed away?

first_imgThere are growing concerns among the people of Killybegs over the whereabouts of €10million funding that was promised the enhancement of the harbour.A funding investment was announced earlier this year to extend and develop the Killybegs Harbour Centre to benefit industry in the fishing town. However, questions are being raised over delays in the project, which was due to commence in the last quarter of this year. According to Donegal Deputy Pat the Cope, the users of Killybegs Harbour and the general public have expressed concern that the funding has been moved to another project elsewhere.Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher Leas Cheann Comhairle claims that confusion reigns within the Government and broader Department as to the certainty of the €10 million project in Killybegs.Deputy Gallagher has raised the public concerns today, saying: “I have already tabled questions to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine on the possibility that he has reprioritised or redirected the funding for the Killybegs project towards another fishery harbour centre elsewhere in the state. “I have also asked for written assurances that no delays are envisaged for the Killybegs project and that he as Minister furthermore confirm a clear timeline for the project from contract stage to completion. “I have also requested that written confirmation be provided that funding remains in place for the project.”Mr Gallager said that immediate clarity is needed on this situation to allay local fears for the project. He said: “It is regrettable that the Minister allowed such a situation to evolve in the first case, the works earmarked for Killybegs are much needed and are in the planning process for some time, we will not accept any situation whereby funding which has been proposed for Killybegs would be considered for other areas. “Killybegs requires further investment and the Government must stand four- square with the people of southwest Donegal in delivering this project,” concluded Pat the Cope.Has €10M funding for Killybegs Harbour works washed away? was last modified: October 6th, 2018 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:harbourKillybegsPat The Cope Gallagherlast_img read more

Vizag ODI: Fans like skipper Sehwag and ‘local boy’ Rohit

first_imgThe name Virender Sehwag evokes a certain palpitation in the hearts of most cricket fans. When he is at the crease, there is always a sense of drama, be it due to his attacking shots or the foreboding that he might get out at any time. And that’s what the fans love. The locals in Visakhapatnam are no different. The moment the BCCI announced that Sehwag would captain the side in the ongoing One-Day International series against the West Indies, ticket sales accelerated.According to an Andhra Cricket Association official, in the absence of headliners like Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, Sehwag came as a boon.”We have had a tremendous response from the fans, and this (crowd of approximately 28,000) is a record for us. We have never had a situation where not a single ticket is left. The guarantee that a real crowd-puller like Sehwag was coming here was the best news for us,” media manager C R Mohan told Mail Today on Friday.Unlike the Hyderabad Ranji team from the same state, which has its own lineage of artists from M L Jaisimha to VVS Laxman, Andhra hasn’t really had much in terms of heritage, with the last two players from the team representing India being the workmanlike Y Venugopal Rao and MSK Prasad. Which is perhaps why the fans love a flair player like Sehwag, as do local businesses, that have used his face in various good luck messages put up throughout the city. The closest thing to a local that Vizag has is Rohit Sharma, whose mother hails from the city. And while the batsman himself is a product of the Mumbai system through-and through, the fans consider him their real local connection with the national team.”People who know about his connection with Vizag love him like their own. Also, who doesn’t love a player who plays as beautifully as him? Just to see those wristy drives and flicks is worth the price of a ticket,” said Seeshu, a fan at the stadium. But among the female fans in the city, it is Gautam Gambhir who is the most popular. Like Rahul Dravid before him, they consider Gambhir to be the epitome of charm – a good-looking man who is shy and unassuming but loves a scrap on the field.”He is a great batsman but unlike most of the youngsters who appear a bit arrogant, he just looks like the boy you can take home to your parents! I really like Gambhir,” said Vijayalakshmi, who was chanting Gambhir’s name while he fielded at the North End boundary in the initial overs. When pointed out that he recently got married, she said: “Of course, it’s a wonderful thing for him and I’m sure the whole country wishes him the best for this new life.”advertisementlast_img read more
